Frieze

Beeb Birtles & Darryl Cotton

After Zoot split Beeb Birtles & Darryl Cotton were approached by the Frieze Company which made suits for men.

Beeb Birtles: The actual campaign put to us was quite funny. They wanted us to reform Zoot virtually, and they wanted each guy to be named after a material, like cloth material. So Darryl was ok, he was Cotton right? But they wanted to call me something like Terry Lene, and I was supposed to have a brother called Crepe Lene, and so on. They wanted the group to be called ‘Deep Frieze’. So here we were sitting around a board room table, with these guys pitching these ideas at us. Darryl and I looked at each other and said to them: “Listen, we’ve just come out of the biggest teeny bopper band in Australia, and we can tell you right now that if you put this sort of concept together and present it to the kids, they are going to laugh you right out of the dance halls and department stores.”
